Leaving your guitar at full tension is its normal operating state. The concerns about added stress from hanging are negligible compared to the inherent string tension. Unless you’re storing the guitar for an extremely long period (many months or years) without any environmental control, or preparing it for shipping, there’s no practical benefit to detuning it for wall hanging.
How does humidity affect a hanging guitar?
Humidity is perhaps the single most critical environmental factor affecting *any* guitar, whether hanging, on a stand, or in a case. Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it constantly exchanges moisture with the surrounding air. When a guitar is hanging on a wall, it is fully exposed to the room’s ambient humidity.
If the humidity is too low (below 40-45% RH), the wood in the guitar will dry out and shrink. This can lead to a host of problems: fret ends becoming sharp and protruding from the fretboard (“fret sprout”), the guitar top sinking, wood cracking (especially on acoustic guitars), and glue joints weakening. Conversely, if the humidity is too high (above 55-60% RH), the wood will absorb moisture and swell. This can cause the action to rise, fret buzz (due to the neck bowing forward), and finishes to haze or become sticky.
For these reasons, maintaining a consistent relative humidity between 45% and 55% in the room where your guitar is hung is vital for its long-term health and playability. Using a hygrometer to monitor the humidity and a room humidifier or dehumidifier as needed is highly recommended.
Are auto-locking guitar hangers worth it?
