Identifying the signs of a healthy beaver population is relatively straightforward once you know what to look for. The most obvious indicators are the presence of active dams and lodges. An active lodge will often show fresh mud plastering, and you might see steam rising from the ventilation shafts in cold weather. Look for freshly cut trees, especially saplings and smaller deciduous trees like willow, aspen, or birch, characterized by their distinctive hourglass-shaped gnaw marks and scattered wood chips.
Another strong sign is the network of canals they dig to access food and building materials, as well as well-worn trails or “slides” leading from the bank into the water. In the water itself, you might observe “food caches” – piles of branches anchored to the bottom near the lodge, stored for winter consumption. Finally, the presence of diverse wildlife such as waterfowl, amphibians, and other mammals attracted to the beaver-created wetlands is an excellent sign that the beavers are successfully performing their keystone role and creating a thriving ecosystem.
